One of the unique features of the 1878 Morgan Dollar is that some coins have 8 tail feathers for the eagle and some others have 7 tail feathers. The main reason of this difference is that, the designer changed it to 7 feathers to match other US coins featuring bald eagle with odd number of feathers. This coin was replaced by the Peace dollar in 1921.
